Engine Company 1




EARLY HISTORY

1678 Organized and located in Queen Street (now Court Street) and was called the Prison Engine as it was housed near the prison.
July 27, 1733 Became Engine No. 7.
July 27, 1733 Engine No. 2 became Engine No. 1 and located in the same quarters.
1758 Was called "Old North Engine No. 1 was moved to a location near the Old North Meeting House.
1760 Was again moved to a site near the Watch House, Middle Street (now North Square).
September 19, 1787 Moved to Hanover Street.
1828 Out of commision.
March 15, 1847 Suffolk Engine No. 1 organized and located on Suffolk Street.
1851 Out of commission
1852 Engine No. 17 in South Boston became Engine No. 1 and was located on Broadway near Dorchester Street.
1854 Was named Mazeppa No. 1.
December 19, 1859 Steam Engine No. 1 was put into service in the same location and the Hand Engine Company was disbanded.
April 1868 Moved to new quarters at Dorchester and West Fourth Streets, South Boston.
June 2, 1868 Named Mazeppa Engine No. 1
1873 Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 1).
