EARLY HISTORY

October 18, 1715 Organized and located near the Town Dock (now Dock Square).
1758 Became Endeavor Engine No. 4
October 31, 1787 Moved from Dock Square to Ann Street (now Hanover Street).
June 1829 Moved to Distil-House Square and later disbanded.
1829 Reorganized on Canal Street.
1835 Moved to North Bennett Street.
1838 Out of commission.
June 1, 1842 Organized as Protector Engine No. 4 and located in Saratoga Street, East Boston. It was later disbanded.
1852 Engine No. 14 was changed to Cataract Engine No. 4 and was located on Mt. Vernon Street.
May 15, 1860 Steam Engine No. 4 placed into service and located in the basement of City Hall, Court Square. Hand Engine No. 4 was disbanded.
1862 Moved to Scollay's Building, Court Street.
June 2, 1868 Named Barnicoat Engine No. 4
1870 House torn down and Company moved to Smith's Stable on Bulfinch Street while a new house was being built.
1872 Moved into a new house on Bulfinch Street, with Extinguisher Wagon No. 1.
1873 Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 4 - as it remains today).
