Engine Company 5




EARLY HISTORY

October 18, 1715 Organized and located at the North Meeting House.
July 27, 1733 Named Copper Engine No. 5 and moved to Town House (where the Old State House now stands).
1740 Became Marlborough Engine No. 5 and kept same location.
1827 Located in Market Square.
1831 Moved to a house in Dock Square.
1838 Became Lyman Engine No. 5
1852 Name changed again, now to Extinguisher No. 5 and moved to East Street, (formerly Hand Engine No. 20).
July 26, 1858 The company was disbanded and a new company was organized and placed into service in East Boston.
August 2, 1860 Hand Engine Company disbanded.
September 1, 1860 Steam Engine No. 5 placed into service at a new house at 64 Marion Street, East Boston.
October 1, 1867 Was assigned a self-propelled steamer, but it frightened horses so badly it was later discarded and the horse-drawn steamer was placed back in service.
June 2, 1868 Named Elisha Smith Engine No. 5.
1873 Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 5 - as it remains today).
