EARLY HISTORY

October 18, 1715 Organized and located at the Town House.
July 27, 1733 Became Engine No. 2, near the Meeting House, at North Street and Clark Street.
January, 1740 A new company was organized, Hero Engine No. 6, and was located on Hancock Street.
1799 Company moved to Derne Street.
1852 Name changed to Melville Engine No. 6 and was located on Leverett Street.
1853 Moved into a new house on Wall Street with Hose No. 3.
December 16, 1858 Hand Engine Company was disbanded.
January 1, 1860 Steam Engine Company No. 6 placed in service and called Eclipse No. 6.
June 2, 1868 Name changed back to Melville Engine No. 6.
1873 Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 6).
1889 New quarters built on Leverett Street.
