EARLY HISTORY

January 5, 1826 Boston Engine No. 2 organized and was located on Sea Street (now Atlantic Avenue between Kneeland and Summer Streets).
1838 Was called Extinguisher Engine No. 20.
1839 Moved to East Street (near South Station).
1852 Changed to Extinguisher Engine No. 5, on East Street, and later disbanded.
January 3, 1870 Dorchester annexed to Boston. Independence Engine Company 5 of the Dorchester Fire Department became Independence Engine No. 20 and was located in a new house in Walnut Street, Neponset.
1873 Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 20 - as it remains today).
