HISTORY

The first regularly organized steam fire engine company was organized here on January 1, 1859, and it is from that date the modern Boston Fire Department traces its history.

The entire fire company consisted of paid employees of the city of Boston, unlike any combination of paid, call, or volunteer members of the department that had previously existed.

The firehouse was located at 12 North Bennet Street, at the corner of Bennet Place. The firehouse was closed in 1868 and Engine 8 moved into a new firehouse at 133 Salem Street (extant).

The building at North Bennett Street was sold and was converted into residential housing and remains extant.
