HISTORYThis firehouse was built in 1890-1891 on the site of a previous firehouse, and was occupied on March 31, 1891. The earlier firehouse was built in 1851 and was occupied by Hand Engine 9. (Horse) Engine Company 9 maintained quarters on this site since being organized on December 26, 1859. The building was designed by City Architect Harrison H. Atwood. The firehouse is located at 60 Paris Street, between Meridian Street and Maverick Street, in the Maverick Square section of East Boston. In 1892, Ladder Company 2 moved in from their previous quarters at 64 Marion Street. Engine 9 and Ladder 2 stayed at this firehouse, except for a brief renovation period in 1930-1931, until May 13, 1977 when the firehouse was closed and the fire companies moved into a new firehouse at 239 Sumner Street, several blocks away. The building was sold by the city and remains extant. It is now occupied by a veterans group, the Italian-American War Veterans.
