HISTORY

This firehouse was built in 1875 and Engine Company 22 moved in on July 3, 1875. The company moved in from a firehouse on Parker (now Hemenway) Street in the Back Bay.

This firehouse was located at approximately 132 Dartmouth Street, near the corner of Harwich Street and opposite Buckingham Street in the South End section of the city. The location now is covered by a portion of the Copley Place Mall and Shopping Center.

Engine 22 stayed here until May 9, 1899 when they moved to temporary quarters at 60 Bristol Street (Fire Department Headquarters), while a new firehouse was under construction at 70 Warren Avenue.

The firehouse on Dartmouth Street was demolished to allow for an expansion of the railroad right-of-way in the area. The modern present-day Back Bay Station is located opposite where the Dartmouth Street firehouse once stood.
