HISTORY
This firehouse was built in 1867 as part of the Charlestown Fire
Department. On January 5, 1874 the firehouse became part of the Boston Fire Department, as the City of Charlestown
was annexed to the City of Boston.
The firehouse was located at 11 Elm Street, between High Street and Bartlett Street.
At the time of annexation, Charlestown's Howard Engine and Hose Company occupied the firehouse. On January 5, 1874, Boston's
Engine Company 27 was organized here.
On December 15, 1894, the Board of Fire Commissioners voted to move Engine 27 to the quarters of Ladder 9 on Main
Street, while the firehouse on Elm Street was closed for renovations.
On April 22, 1938 the firehouse was closed. Engine 27 moved to 333 Main Street, the quarters of Ladder
Company 9, several blocks away.
No information is available as to the disposition of the property at 11 Elm Street.
