HISTORY

This firehouse was built in 1867 as part of the Charlestown Fire Department. On January 5, 1874 the firehouse became part of the Boston Fire Department, as the Town of Charlestown was annexed to the City of Boston.

The firehouse was located at 11 Elm Street, between High Street and Bartlett Street.

At the time of annexation, Charlestown's Howard Engine and Hose Company occupied the firehouse. On January 5, 1874, Boston's Engine Company 27 was organized here. Engine 27 stayed here until April 22, 1938 when the firehouse was closed.

Engine 27 moved to 333 Main Street, the quarters of Ladder Company 9, several blocks away.

No information is available as to the disposition of the property at 11 Elm Street.
