HISTORY

This firehouse was built on an unknown date as part of Charlestown Fire Department, and Bunker Hill Engine Company 2 had its quarters here.

The firehouse was located at 556 Main Street at Sullivan Square, Charlestown. The site is now part of the traffic circle at Sullivan Square.

The Town of Charlestown was annexed to the City of Boston on January 5, 1874 and several fire companies from the Charlestown Fire Department moved to the Boston Fire Department.

Hose 2 (Charlestown) was organized on annexation day, January 5, 1874, at the firehouse at 556 Main Street, Charlestown.

Hose 2 was disbanded on March 17, 1884 when Engine Company 32 moved into a new firehouse at 440 Bunker Hill Street, just a short distance away.

The firehouse at 556 Main Street may have been torn down when the elevated subway line was built through Charlestown and a major elevated subway station was built at Sullivan Square.
